Short Biography:
Dr. Nairn received her B.S. in Microbiology in 1989 and a M.S. in Molecular Biology and Microbiology in 1993 from the University of Central Florida. In 2001, she received her PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Georgia. Her dissertation project involved the cloning and expression of the α-mannosidase from Trypanosoma cruzi under the supervision of Dr. Kelley Moremen. Dr. Nairn worked as a post-doctoral research associate in the Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases for a year to expand her knowledge of Trypanosomes.

Research Interests:
In 2003, Dr. Nairn joined the CCRC as a postdoctoral research associate to work on transcript analysis of glycan-related genes as part of the NCRR-funded Integrated Technology for Biomedical Glycomics project. During the first several years of the project, methods were developed for analyzing transcripts from mouse tissues and mouse ES cells for >700 glycan-related genes using a qRT-PCR platform. The assembly of a comprehensive mouse gene list and the design of gene-specific primer pairs involved the assistance of an army of energetic undergraduates. The gene list has recently been expanded to include analysis of human cells and tissues.

In order to present the transcript analysis data in a biologically meaningful context, Dr. Nairn used available databases (ie. KEGG) and literature sources to create a series of biochemical pathway diagrams to pair transcript data with the enzyme(s) they encode and the eventual structure(s) that are produced. Through several collaborations with investigators within the CCRC and outside the university, the technology has been applied to transcript analysis in human, mouse, rat, zebrafish, Drosophila and Pine analyses. The eventual goal of the transcript studies is to integrate transcript abundance data with glycan structural analysis developed by other research groups.
